A Stunning Electric Vehicle!
More car than motorcycle, Lit Motors' C-1 2-wheeler, self-stabilizing prototype looks like a very promising personal vehicle, and Lit Motors is hiring a lot of engineers to go from prototype to manufacturing a production model.

Based in San Francisco, the company is currently looking for 10 additional employees, including 8 engineers in 8 different disciplines of car-making.

While not as revolutionary as the Segway, the Lit Motors C-1 is more an evolutionary product, mixing motorcycle technology, auto technology with an electric propulsion system. Its gyro system allowing it to stand still on 2 wheels is probably its most interesting feature. But at an estimated retail price of $19,000 ($24,000 before government incentives) it might still have a hard time competing with the Nissan Leaf, Ford C-Max or Chevy Volt whose prices are going to drop quickly as acceptance and production levels rise.

It's not a car and it's not a motorcycle, so who is going to buy it? Motorcycle enthusiasts might regard it too much as a car, and car owners might find it too motorcycle-like and unsafe. Even with a body and air bags, being on 2 wheels at 60mph (top speed is 100mph) is still much more dangerous that being on 4 wheels.

An interesting part of the company's story is the tenacity of its founder Danny Kim, and the fact that the company has arrived at an astonishing point without raising a significant amount of capital. Funding so far has been provided by family, friends and a few angel investors.

But the low-budget phase is over. The 10 new hires mean the company will have to raise a significant amount of capital before being in the black. These engineers are not cheap, and with fully loaded salaries and facility and tools to provide an efficient work environment, they'll amount to an annual cost of well above $1 million.

I wouldn't be surprised to see an announcement in the next few weeks or months that the company has joined the rank of the more than 200 VC-funded start-up companies in TheGreenJobBank's directory, and raised $10 million in venture capital.

General Electric and Andover, MA-based ENEL Green Power (jobs at ENEL) announced on Monday Apr. 8th, 2013 that GE will invest $40 million to help ENEL build the Buffalo Dunes wind farm in Kansas.
In addition to the $40 million, GE will supply 135 wind turbines, and will operate and maintain the wind farm after completion.

The Buffalo Dunes wind farm, located in Finney, Grant and Haskell Counties in southwest Kansas in expected to cost $370 million and be completed by December 1013 according to ENEL.

The construction, handled by Broomfield, CO-based RES Americas (jobs at RES Americas), is expected to be completed by December 2013, and employ 150 construction workers.

After completion, the wind farm will create 15 permanent green jobs, in addition to the jobs needed at GE to manufacture and maintain the 135 wind turbines and related infrastructure.

The wind farm will produce 250MW of clean electricity, enough to power 65,000 homes. Alabama Power Co, a unit of power company Southern Co, will buy most of the electricity from the wind farm under a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA).

And here's why: it just got a capital infusion of $35 million, with the participation of Bill Gates, along with 4 Venture Capital firms.

This much money for a 100% clean and cheap battery system could revolutionize the battery and energy storage market, and help clean energy and electric vehicles become a huge success much faster.
Aquion's Aqueous Hybrid Ion battery consists of an anode made of activated carbon, a cathode made from sodium and magnesium oxide, and a water-based electrolyte.

The Company will be delivering initial, pre-production units to selected lead customers and partners throughout 2013 and will begin shipping production units from its high-volume manufacturing plant in Pennsylvania at the end of this year.

We should expect a significant number of jobs opening from the company as it ramps up production, sales and delivery efforts. According to Aquion, the number of new jobs could reach 400 by the end of 2015.

The $35 Million in new capital just raised by the company comes on top of $20 million raised in 2011 from Kleiner Perkins and Foundation Capital, and a $10 million loan.

Power HRG has already hired more than 75 employees in the Chicago region with plans to create at least 150 additional jobs in 2013.

Power HRG specializes in energy-efficient windows, siding and roofs. Its Consultants educate, inform and guide customers on ways to make their homes more energy efficient and environmentally friendly. Its products are manufactured in the United States, employing thousands of Americans in green jobs producing sustainable, energy-efficient products.

Power’s burgeoning success in a rebounding economy is due in large part to energy efficiency tax credits for homeowners, state and federal support for green-collar job growth and the company’s commitment to investing in a green workforce and renewable energy solutions.

In 2011, Power expanded into three additional markets including Boston, Long Island and Atlanta — accompanying its existing PA, NJ, MD and CT territories. As a result of this aggressive expansion, Power has added more than 600 jobs to the economy.

This is the typical chicken and egg problem. No charging stations, no electric cars; no electric cars, no charging stations. Without charging stations everywhere, the range of EV's will remain a problem, until battery and charging technologies deliver break-throughs in increased capacity and shorter charge time. Scientists say it will take 5 to 10 years to get there.

Its potential is huge, measured in tens of billions of dollars. Both have been pouring huge amounts of capital (well over $1 billion) into charging station companies in the past 5 years.

Four of these charging stations companies are coming out ahead of the pack. The race is intense with all the players trying to sign partnerships with large retailers (Ikea, Walmart, Walgreens), parking operators, mall operators, airports, rental car companies, fortune 500 companies (Boeing, Google), and of course, the largest potential customer, the federal government. But the pace is not fast enough.

Better Place
Better Place has raised a staggering $830 million in 5 years, including $100 million last week from its Israeli backer Israel Corporation. In my opinion its system of swapping depleted batteries with fully charged ones in a few minutes is absolutely the best, compared to the time it takes to recharge batteries. Edging its bets, Better Place also provides a battery charging service.

Coulomb has also received $37 million from the U.S. Department of Energy for its ChargePoint America program. Its ChargePoint network is today the most developed with almost 10,000 charging stations in 14 countries.

It has signed a $100 million contract with the California Public Utilities Commission, just approved by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. The contract calls for the installation of 200 publicly available charging stations in retail locations in the San Francisco Bay Area, the San Joaquin Valley, the Los Angeles area, and San Diego County. The installation is expected to create 200 construction jobs over 4 years, and an economic benefit of $185 million.

AutoGrid, a green start-up, officially launched its smart grid data analysis software with $9 million in funding.

What is the smart-grid?

AutoGrid Systems, a "smart grid" start-up officially launched its "big data" analysis software to help optimize the electric grid.

AutoGrid also announced that it has signed agreements with 2 large customers: the City of Palo Alto Utilities and the Sacramento Municipal Utilities District.

AutoGrid has so far raised $9 million from Foundation Capital, Voyager Capital and Stanford University.
It has also obtained $5 million worth of contracts from the U.S. Department of Energy's ARPA-E research agency and the California Energy Commission.

Its founders are all veterans of the utility industry and must know what they're getting into. The smart grid green sector is already crowded with fierce competition from well funded companies that have several years of head start over AutoGrid.
The most interesting part of AutoGrid's story is that its main backer, Foundation Capital, has also funded AutoGrid competitors Silver Spring Networks, EnerNOC, and eMeter (since acquired by Siemens).

EnerNOC and Silver Spring Networks are both extremely well capitalized and are years ahead of AutoGrid. They both received additional funding from other big-name venture capital firms. EnerNOC got funded by Braemar Energy Ventures and Draper Fisher Jurvetson, and Silver Spring Networks by Kleiner Perkins. Both are doing very well, and hiring right and left, creating good green jobs; EnerNOC has about 80 open positions, and SSN has 33. In comparison, AutoGrid has 5 open positions.

AutoGrid has also a slew of other competitors in the “smart grid/energy management” space, all well capitalized by top VC firms: Adura (VantagePoint Capital Partners), Comverge (public company first funded by Rockport Capital), EcoFactor (Rockport), FirstFuel (Battery Ventures), GridNet (Braemar Energy Ventures), GridPoint (NEA), SmartSynch (acquired by Itron), Tendril (VantagePoint), Trilliant (VantagePoint), and Viridity (Braemar, Battery and GE Ecomagination). And, on top of that, let’s not forget IBM!

To succeed, AutoGrid will need a lot of luck, a lot of hard work, a lot of persistence and a lot more money! However, with $14 million in the bank, they'll be able to make strategic hires (new green jobs!), improving their likelihood of success.

TheGreenJobBank has employer profiles for more than 30 smart-grid companies, and almost all of them are currently hiring. At the top is EnerNOC, with 80 open positions, followed by Silver Spring Networks with 33 and Nexant with 25. The total of all smart-grid jobs on TheGreenJobBank is about 200.

A new briefing paper by Ethan Pollack of the Economic Policy Institute (EPI) titled "Counting up to Green: Assessing the green economy and its implications for growth and equity", paints a positive outlook for the green economy and its potential to create green jobs.

Assessing the size of the green economy and the number of green jobs remains an important issue. Various slightly different definitions of green jobs make it difficult to accurately count the number of green jobs, and size the green economy.

The US Government's Bureau of Labor Statistics published its own definition in Sept, 2010, and several Think Tanks have also published their own, most notably the Pew Charitable Trusts, and The Brookings Institution.

Flaws in the count of green jobs
The EPI report examines in details the data from the latest BLS report released in April 2012 in which the number of green jobs was estimated at 3.1 million in 2010. But the BLS report was found to have several flaws that led to under-counting the number of green jobs. First, the BLS did not follow its own definition of green jobs, and left out a portion of green jobs (type "B" jobs) that it found hard to measure. Second, the BLS didn't count green jobs in businesses that derive less than half of their revenue in green products and services.

Government does better than the private sector
Of the 3.1 million green jobs, 73% are in the private sector and 27% in government (federal, state and local). But when looking at the total number of jobs (green and non-green), 5% of government jobs are green, compared to 2% of private sector jobs.

Manufacturing is strongest
In the private sector, manufacturing accounts for the biggest share of green jobs, followed by construction, professional, scientific and technical, management and waste services, transportation and warehousing, trade, and utilities. Together, these 6 private economy sectors account for close to 90% of green jobs.
However, the report points out that when compared to the total number of jobs in each sector (green and non-green), the utilities sector is by far the strongest with 12% of its workforce employed in green jobs, compared to 6.8% in construction and 6.2% in manufacturing.

California dominates
From a regional view, the EPI report confirms TheGreenJobBank's own numbers with California having the largest number of green jobs, followed by New York and Texas.

Important findings
The findings of the EPI report also confirm what we, at TheGreenJobBank, have known for a long time:

Greener industries grow faster

Green states have fared better in the economic downturn

Green jobs are accessible to workers across the spectrum of education

Manufacturing plays a strong role in the green economy

Green jobs go beyond renewable energy. [That's been established long ago by TheGreenJobBank; see our own definition of green jobs]

The most stunning part of Ethan Pollack's report is its conclusion that predicts that the green economy and green jobs will help solve some of our most critical socio-economic problems: income inequality and disenfranchisement.

"The old economic model relies on depleting the economy’s environmental capital stock at an unsustainable rate, depriving future generations of a healthy and diverse environment and harming long-run economic growth (since much of the economy depends on a clean environment and ample stocks of natural resources)."

"In sum, a dirty economy subsidizes the well-off by taxing the poor and disenfranchised, distorts the market, and shortchanges future generations by leaving the world a worse place for them to live."

"But the concept of green jobs does play an important role in illustrating a positive vision of a green economy. It reminds us that the seeds of a green transition are planted throughout the economy, that the fundamental structure of the economy will remain intact, and that this vision isn’t so radical but rather is already happening all around us."

As a result, the sustainable business market is flourishing, providing a fertile place for green startups to take root and have a major impact on business and industrial practices. Here we highlight just a few of the many green startups that are affecting how we do business, altering how we commute, build offices, get power, find financing, and even how we chat around the water cooler.

Sharp Corp, deeply in the red, has recently announced that it will cut almost 11,000 jobs (or 18% of its workforce) around the World, and sell many assets. The asset sale may include Recurrent Energy that it bought in 2010 for $305 Million.

Rumor has it that Sharp hopes to get $312 Million for Recurrent Energy, a US solar farm developer. Recurrent is itself in good financial shape, with almost $2 billion in project finance commitments from third parties, according to Recurrent's CEO, Arno Harris.

"We continue to meet and exceed our business goals as we build out our contracted project portfolio," Harris said. The company has "excellent and long-standing relationships with the major financial institutions engaged in the energy sector," Harris added.

He expects the company to attract the interest of other financial sponsors in the event that Sharp drops out or reduces its stake.
Troubles at parent companies often lead to the sale of well-performing assets, to extract a good price for them.

Recurrent seems to be one of these well-performing assets, as its CEO affirmed. It continues to hire for US-based positions, and has currently 12 open positions, including 9 posted in Sept. 2012.

Last week saw an unusual increase in the number of green jobs indexed by TheGreenJobBank. Even in a period of economic uncertainty, a number of green employers have added many new positions, proof that the green economy is more resilient than many others.

Energy Management company EnerNOC is one of them. They've added 19 new open positions this week alone, to bring the total to 61.

These new jobs are in a wide variety of occupations, including sales, marketing, software development and administrative/management.

Environmental company AECOM has added 20 jobs, for a total of 65.

New green jobs at AECOM include Air Quality Scientists, Environmental Engineers, and waste/water treatment technicians.

Another environmental company, Environmental Resources Management (ERM) added over 30 jobs last week, bringing the total open positions to 172!

And of course, our darling green employer, SolarCity added a stellar 64 jobs this week alone, and 14 last week, bringing its total to 129!

21 of its open positions are solar site auditors. As described by SolarCity, "The Site Auditor will provide professional site auditing services to obtain and communicate the necessary technical data to the SolarCity design team for the preparation of permit ready documents needed to facilitate the installation of solar photovoltaic systems. This person will also function as a project manager, field technician, and permit technician when assigned to do so."

And it's not a surprise that SolarCity has also many openings for sales reps and solar PV installers.

Although not at the top of the list for its total open jobs (50), highly respected The Nature Conservancy added over 30 jobs last week, which is remarkable for a non-profit organization.

Even though it's not as high as the number of weekly new jobs we saw in January and February (between 2,000 and 2,300 per week), last week's number of 1,722 is a good number in an economy that has regrettably slowed down in the past few months. However, it is somehow reassuring to see the companies listed above are on a hiring spree, in various segments of the green industry.

SunPower Corp has just signed a PPA with PG&E to deliver 100 MW of solar energy to California, creating 200 green jobs.

SunPower Corp has just signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) to deliver the power generated by the Henrietta solar farm in Kings County to the state of California.

According to SunPower Corp, the project will create 200 construction jobs, and inject $72.7 million in the local economy. SunPower Corp has not disclosed how many permanent jobs will be created to operate and maintain the solar farm when it goes online.

The project, when completed will deliver 100 MW of electricity, enough to power an estimated 36,000 average homes. The solar farm will be built with SunPower's latest solar technology that can rotate the solar panels to follow the sun, which increases efficiency by 25%.

"We are very pleased to be working again with PG&E to deliver cost-competitive solar power at a 100MW scale, while creating jobs and economic opportunity for the local community," said Howard Wenger, SunPower president, regions.

Still, the project is not a sure thing. It is contingent on approval by the California Public Utilities Commission and SunPower's ability to complete all applicable permits. It is expected that construction will begin in 2015, with the plant beginning commercial operation by late 2016.

SunPower Corp has currently 41 open green jobs.

As we humans more environmentally conscious, so does the area job market. According to the D.C.
So, what exactly qualifies as a green job? According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics, green jobs include jobs in businesses that produce goods or provide services that benefit the environment or conserve natural resources; and jobs in which workers' duties involve making their establishment's processes more environmentally friendly. In addition to technical positions, this includes jobs in engineering, research, accounting, marketing, sales, management and administration.

"The notion of 'green collar jobs' is misleading and limiting" said Bernard Ferret, president of TheGreenJobBank, the leading search engine for green jobs. His search engine crawls the web daily to provide the most current listings available from thousands of websites. The listings come from businesses, nonprofit organizations, trade associations, research labs, green recruiters, and green job boards. The site features hundreds of employer profiles enabling job seekers to research easily the green companies for which they want to work.

"The D.C. area is very different from the rest of the country because it's home to nonprofits such as the World Resources Institute, World Wildlife Fund, Conservation International, GreenPeace, the Sierra Club and The Nature Conservancy" Ferret observed. Of the 10,000 jobs currently on Ferret's website, some 320 are in D.C., with another 320 in Virginia, and 200 in Maryland, many of which are with nonprofits.

For many green employers, the biggest recruiting challenge they face is workforce education and certification. "Our educational system doesn't produce enough trained and certified workers" said Ferret. He reported this to be particularly the case for solar installation and green building jobs.

But for other openings, you need the same skills as you'd need in similar jobs in another type of organization, including passion and commitment. "Our biggest challenge tends to be finding really good communicators," said Mike Tidwell, executive director of the Chesapeake Climate Action Network, which is working to build and mobilize a grassroots movement in our region to call for state, national and international policies that will put us on a path to climate stability. "Organizing for anything, including clean energy solutions, requires good, clear and compelling communications. and I don't see a lot of that skill" he added.

"The green industry is dominated primarily by startups founded by passionate people who have cultivated a product or service that aligns with their values system with the development of a healthy profit center" explained Karen Biscoe, founder of Massachusetts-based Green Search Partner, a full service search firm focusing on executive level recruiting. "When these companies are building a team, they are no different from other entrepreneurs, they want technical depth a well rounded resume and a deep commitment to their mission," she said.

"If you don't value equity as much as stabilityand a steady paycheck, the gren industry may not be the best palce for you," said Biscoe. "But if it is for yo, the persistence of social networking in the recruiting industry has definitively shaped the search process," she continued. "I can sum it up this way: it's no longer who or what you know, it's who knows you."
SolarCity currently offers solar systems for free to Maryland
residential customers whose cost per KWh turns out to be less than what
the local utilities charge, not counting the benefits to the
environment.
The opening ceremony of its expanded operations center
attracted the presence of local politicians included U.S. Senator Ben
Cardin, as well as State Senator Jim Rosapepe and State Delegate
Joseline A. Peña-Melnyk.
thanks to effective state energy policies and Federal initiatives
designed to empower homeowners and small businesses,” said U.S. Senator
Ben Cardin, a member of the Senate Environment and Public Works
Committee.
“Solar energy makes sense for a wide range of homeowners and
businesses,” said SolarCity Regional Vice President Leon Keshishian.
“Going solar can save Marylanders significant money on what they’re
currently paying for utility power--and it’s easier to go solar now than
ever before.”
The openings in Maryland are for jobs located in Beltsville, Baltimore, Bethesda and Jessup.
